A Rua S\u00e3o Bento \u00e9 uma das mais antigas de S\u00e3o Paulo. Foi aberta alguns anos depois da funda\u00e7\u00e3o da capital paulista (em 25 de janeiro de 1554) e, naquela \u00e9poca, era um simples caminho de terra que ligava a antiga aldeia do cacique Tibiri\u00e7\u00e1 (atual Largo S\u00e3o Bento) at\u00e9 as proximidades da Rua Direita.<\/p>\n

O nome refere-se ao Mosteiro de S\u00e3o Bento, localizado no largo de mesmo nome. O local era a taba do cacique Tibiri\u00e7\u00e1 e foi doado pela C\u00e2mara de S\u00e3o Paulo em 1600 aos monges. A primeira igreja de S\u00e3o Bento foi constru\u00edda em 1598. Reconstru\u00edda em 1650, passou por diversas reformas at\u00e9 ser demolida. Em 1910, iniciou-se a constru\u00e7\u00e3o do novo Mosteiro de S\u00e3o Bento, conclu\u00edda em 1921.<\/p>\n

A sua primeira denomina\u00e7\u00e3o foi Rua de Martim Afonso Tibiri\u00e7\u00e1, nome que os portugueses deram ao cacique. Com a constru\u00e7\u00e3o do Convento de S\u00e3o Francisco, inaugurado em 17 de setembro de 1647, a Rua S\u00e3o Bento passa a ser conhecida como Rua que Vai para S\u00e3o Francisco. Tempos depois, receberia os nomes de Rua de S\u00e3o Bento para S\u00e3o Francisco, Rua que Vai para S\u00e3o Bento e Rua Direita de S\u00e3o Bento.<\/p>\n

Em 12 de mar\u00e7o de 1897, a Resolu\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00ba 82 da C\u00e2mara Municipal de S\u00e3o Paulo alterou o nome do logradouro para Rua Coronel Moreira C\u00e9sar, comandante militar que havia sido morto dias antes no arraial de Canudos, na Bahia. A medida n\u00e3o agradou a popula\u00e7\u00e3o e, em 28 de agosto de 1899, a lei n\u00ba 416 determinou que a rua voltasse a ter a denomina\u00e7\u00e3o de S\u00e3o Bento.<\/p>\n

Estudos hist\u00f3ricos apontam que, provavelmente, em 1619 a Rua S\u00e3o Bento foi endere\u00e7o da sede da C\u00e2mara Municipal de S\u00e3o Paulo. O pr\u00e9dio, pr\u00f3prio, foi comprado de Francisco Roiz Velho.<\/p>\n
